"In 2023, I happened upon a brief article about a 103-year-old WWII veteran given the keys to his Northern California city. I was intrigued by this man’s experience: Like my father, he’d served in the Army in occupied Nuremberg starting sometime in the fall of 1945. And his duties in Nuremberg struck another chord: he’d managed entertainment for troops at the famous Nuremberg Opera House in a period aligning with the programs my father had kept from the concerts he had attended." Remembering Vera Klement

"In the parlance of the rom-com—a genre she would have assiduously avoided were she even aware of the term—Vera Klement and I met cute. In early 2001, I was a new resident in the Printers Row building where Vera had lived and worked since the 1970s. Her loft was across the hall from mine. Along with my new home I had a new cocker spaniel, Jasmine, a rescue who was blissfully unaware that relieving herself in the entranceway of a shared space was bad form.
