Toy Stories
The amazing journey of Dalia Verbickas Ancevicius
"There were no toys when Dalia Verbickas Ancevicius lived with her family between 1944 and 1949 in a Lithuanian refugee camp in Hanau, Germany. Ancevicius was eleven when her family left Germany for America’s open doors. To pass time in the camp she played a homemade game with friends to see who would be the first to slap hands down. Ancevicius’ inspiring story of immigration led her to become an industrial designer at the iconic Marvin Glass & Associates toy design company in Chicago. Ancevicius was the firm’s first and only female designer in the 'Mad Men' era. And in 1964 she brought the popular board game 'Hands Down' to the table. (Dave Hoekstra)
Building Metaphors
Brady Corbet deconstructs his epic “The Brutalist”
"The grand, intricate continent-and-era-spanning 'The Brutalist' is a film about filmmaking itself, but fortunately, it's about many other things as well, an ambitious meditation on men and mentorship, about masses of money and stabs and swoops from pencil points. Architecture and filmmaking are art forms that require immense quantities of cash (or loans, or promises) and vast sums of hubris." (Ray Pride)
Everybody Needs Everybody
Inside the groundbreaking “Project a Black Planet” at the Art Institute
"Five years in the making, 'Project a Black Planet,' the groundbreaking exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago, explores the visual arts and culture at the heart of Pan-Africanism—the intellectual, political and social movements that imagined and championed a collective liberatory future for all people of African descent across the globe." (Alison Cuddy)
Everything But the Food
How Chicago’s restaurants play to all five senses
"Audrey Fosse points to a framed black-and-white photo of her great-uncle, Charlie Martin, laughing in a booth with Joan Crawford. “They were a bit of an item back in the day,” she says. The director and actress drip 1950s Hollywood zhuzh in the shot, which fits perfectly among the other photos on the wall: Martin directing on set at Universal Studios, pensively smoking a cigarette and posing arm-in-arm with Crawford, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Fosse’s grandmother." (Sylvie Kirsch)
