CLOSING THE GAP

How Black-Owned Art Galleries Are Shifting the Market Through a Focus on Equity and Identity

"From well-known African American collectors such as Patric McCoy, co-founder of Diasporal Rhythms in Bronzeville, to the archival collection of conceptual artist Theaster Gates at the Rebuild Foundation in Grand Crossing, Black gallerists and collectors have not only helped launch artists’ careers but have also worked to preserve the legacy of African American artists and communities for future generations, before the expansion of corporate and academic efforts toward diversity, equity and inclusion in 2020." (Sabrina Grieg)

THE FOX AND FRIENDS

The Enduring Legacy of a Mild-Mannered Biology Teacher by Day, Superhero Eco-Saboteur By Night

"During the late 1960s and through the 1970s, the Fox captured the imagination of Chicago-area residents while liberating the environment. His Armour-Dial stickers made their way to bars of soap in Los Angeles, Seattle and Houston. The Fox took on regional industrial polluters by plugging factory-sewage pipes, draping smokestacks, and dumping sludge in clean corporate offices to fight the pollution of the Fox River and nature. The Fox was an eco-saboteur before his time." (Dave Hoekstra)

TO MAKE THE CAMERA SEE WHAT I SEE

The Sixties Chicago Photos of John Simmons

"The first time I saw Nikons hanging off Robert “Bobby” Sengstacke’s neck and shoulders he was coming out of his basement darkroom. Bobby was my best friend’s older brother and he took the time to share the magic of photography with me. He became my hero. Bobby had the coolest, most creative friends, listened to the coolest music and his talent shaped my life. I took my first photograph, “Man With a Pistol,” with a camera Bobby loaned me." (John Simmons)
